Bhubaneswar, November 7: Two of the most popular songs of legendary Odia singer Akshay Mohanty, undoubtedly would be “Sabi Sabi Tu Ta Mora Nali Pan Bibi” and “Udi Ja Mo Gudi”, which continue to enamour Odia listeners even to this day. However, the face that brought the song to life on screen years back, actor Sagar Das breathed his last on Monday at his Saheed Nagar residence.
The actor who died at the age of 77, was popular as the ‘laughter king’ during the 60s and 70s of Odia cinema. Although he did not have a long film career, some of his most notable movies are ‘Abhnetri’, ‘Kie Kahara’, ‘Adina Megha’ and ‘Bandhana. He may have taken a sabbatical from films quite early but continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Odia cine fans.
A friend and contemporary of Das, actor-turned-politician, Prasant Nanda told My City Links, “Although he was older than me, we have been good friends since our childhood, as we both lived in Cuttack. He became very popular from the movie “Kie Kahara”. My first movie with him was “Adina Megha” and we both did a song “Alpahasa re anekasha” from the same movie that had become very popular at that time. We have also worked in many other films after that. There was a time when some artists were recruited by the Central Government, and Sagar Das had joined the service. That brought down the number of movies he did. The characters he portrayed were different and, I don’t think anybody else could have replaced him in them. His acting was very natural. Nari, Syamalendu and Sagar Bhai were the ‘comedy triangle’ of Ollywood. The few movies that he did, have been appreciated well by the audience.”
Similarly, sharing his grief, another well-known actor of yesteryear, Ajit Das said, “Though I have never had the opportunity to work with Sagar Das, I did know him personally as I used to teach drama to his son. A gem of a man, he will remain in the hearts of his friends and fans, forever.”
