Chumki Datta Of Bhubaneswar Awarded The Best Entrepreneur In The Country

When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life you have thousand reasons to smile. And, that is precisely what Chumki Datta has managed! A successful entrepreneur, also known for her commitment towards marginalised sections of the society, Chumki has been awarded the Best Entrepreneur in the country under the loco motor disability category by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Chumki, a resident of Khandagiri in the capital, received the award from the President at a ceremony organised to felicitate persons living with disabilities and doing excellent work in their fields on the occasion of International Day for the Persons Living with Disabilities on December 3 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. She is, in fact, the only President award recipient from Odisha this year.

The President on Sunday presented the ‘National Award for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan)-2017’ at a function organised by Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. On this occasion, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Thaawarchand Gehlot, Minister of States for Social Justice and Empowerment, Krishan Pal Gurjar and Ramdas Athawale were also present.

Chumki Datta, who is currently the proprietor of an advertisement company named Mastermind Advertisement Services based in Khandagiri has been running her firm successfully after she met with an accident which led to her disability and forced her to use wheelchair.However, she continued her zeal to prove her worth and started helping the people around herself through her work. She was given the award for not only doing her work effectively but also helping in creating employment for the physically challenged population around them and contributing for the welfare of the section through empowering them and making them self-dependent.

According to the government, she was given the award for showing leadership virtues in working for the people with disabilities where she had also helped senior citizens post their retirement and at a time when they are left with little options of employment.

The nomination of Chumki Datta was recommended by the Orissa Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) as per the procedure where the Centre seeks state recommendations for choosing the best deserving persons. After state recommendations, the names are also scrutinised by other committees.

The National Awards were presented in 14 main categories. Within stipulated date, out of these 14 categories, 984 applications were received from 13 categories. Four Scrutiny Committees constituted by the Department as per the rules had scrutinised the nominations and their recommendations were considered by the National Selection Committee. The National Selection Committee met on 10th and 16th November and recommended 52 persons/institutions for the awards.
