Give A New Look To Your Worn Out Shoes With ‘Revive Shoe Laundry’

City Lights: Fashion

Shoes, the most important part of our wardrobe, take a lot of beating every day. More than often, we ignore their condition and fail to take care of them. Even if we want to, we don’t know how to go about it. Not anymore, though! For the first time, a laundry service for shoes was launched in the capital that promises to keep shoes clean and shiny while ensuring their longevity.

Revive Shoe Laundry, a one of its kind shop in the city, provides professional laundry services for all kinds of shoes irrespective of brand and material. The shop specializes in removing dirt, bacteria, stains, fungus and oil accumulated through daily use.

For Santi Bhusan Nayak, owner of Revive Shoe Laundry, it was his favourite pair of Woodland shoes that inspired him to start an initiative like this!

“I loved the shoe and had no desire to dispose it off even though it had gotten very old and dirty. So, I started surfing through the techniques of shoe cleaning. And, I am happy that even today, I wear the pair! In fact, I have coloured it black from olive. My little success with my Woodland pair encouraged me to find out more about shoe cleaning techniques. Internet was great help as it gave me a lot of information,” says Nayak.

Although Nayak has completed his MCA, he never wanted to do a 9-to-5 job.

“I used to deal with computer parts but when the idea of opening a shoe laundry started taking shape in my mind, I was sure it would click. I contacted a lady from Bhutan called Sazia, who runs a shoe manufacturing unit out there. She agreed to teach me the techniques of shoe cleaning. We arranged for a 7-day training session in Delhi. However, the session lasted for only two days and costed me Rs. 1.5 lakh. Finally, after the session, I opened my shop back home at Vani Vihar.”

The laundry particularly specializes in cleaning sports, synthetic leather and suede shoes. Apart from providing comprehensive repairing services for shoes, it also deals in other leather items like bags and purses. It also has free pickup and delivery facilities for customers.

Talking about his clients, Nayak informs, “Most of them are from the food industry. We get around 100-200 pairs of shoes from the corporate clients every month. We have clients from the IT sector too. We also receive shoes from places like Puri, Angul, Cuttack, Paradip and Rourkela.”

On being asked about the cleaning procedure, he explains, “The shoe cleaning passes through 6-7 procedures like cleaning, conditioning, odour removal and disinfection and it takes about 2-3 days. We charge Rs 120 for normal cleaning of shoes. We also repair shoes for extra charges. The charges might differ for different shoes and the amount of work needed on it.”

Shedding light on his future plans, he adds, “I plan to expand the laundry services to other parts of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. I am also planning to get into manufacturing of leather shoes.”

So, the next time, you are planning to get rid of an old shoe, think again. After all, a ‘revived’ one can save you the trouble of buying a new shoe!
