One can say a lot about a State from the fashion trends it follows. As fashion defines the new generation, catching up with latest trend is the norm. Over the years, Odisha too has been ranking high on fashion, courtesy the evolution of a cosmopolitan culture, entry of top couture brands in the market and not to mention, the regular hosting of fashion weeks and ramp shows in the State. In fact, models from Odisha have now started making their presence felt in various national and international fashion platforms, bringing laurels for their state.
The latest to represent the state in the fashion world are four girls, Deekshya Singh, Madhumita Das, Subhasmita Biswal and Pramita Mohapatra - who have been shortlisted as the top contenders in The Miss TGPC 2017 (The Great Pageant Community)' contest, an online nation-wide beauty pageant.
Talking to MCL, one of the participants, Pramita Mohapatra, while giving an insight into the modeling industry of Bhubaneswar, expressed, “I was 17 when I stepped into the glamour world. At that time, the only platform where we could explore ourselves was through Campus Princess contests, since there was no Femina. However the fashion scenario of Odisha has been evolving and a lot of aspiring girls are getting a chance to explore opportunities. The situation has developed quite a lot in the past five years. Girls like me don't have to go all the way to Kolkata or Mumbai anymore; many modeling agencies have opened up in Bhubaneswar too, so that has been helping a lot!"Taking the opportunity to express her gratitude for the votes she has been receiving in the contest, she further added, "People of Odisha have been extremely supportive of me. I believe that anyone competing in TGPC must crave to learn, more than having the craving to win! I also wish my fellow contestants all the very best!"
These TGPC contestants apart, there have been many others from the fashion world who have brought Odisha into the limelight in the recent years. Some of the popular newsmakers were Sonika Roy; Miss Asia Pacific International 2017, Christeena Biju; Femina Miss India Odisha 2017, Annie Prince Nag; Miss India Elegant 2017, and Ipsita Pati; Miss Asia 2013. One of the first beauty queens hailing from Odisha was Sushrii Shreya Mishraa, the Femina Miss India United Continent 2015. She was also named one of the 'Most Desirable Women in the Country 2017' by the Times of India along with Christeena Biju.Voicing his views on the evolution of fashion in Odisha, popular fashion choreographer and director of Bhubaneswar Style Week, John Ajay says, "Honestly, a couple of years ago, I did feel that Odisha could not provide a platform for modelling and that the fashion industry has no future here. But now, my perspective has transformed completely. Odisha definitely has seen a drastic growth; the fashion launching events, Odisha Fashion Weeks and much more. Take a look at all the pageants happening here; the Femina Miss India Odisha for example, where Sonika Roy represented India for Miss Asia Pacific. The way these girls are going ahead, there definitely is a future for the fashion industry in Odisha."
