Bhubaneswar Launches Lane Driving Trial on Jayadev Vihar–Nalco Chhak Road, City-Wide Rollout Soon
In a move aimed at improving road safety and easing traffic congestion, the Twin City Commissionerate Police has launched a trial lane driving system on the busy Jayadev Vihar–Nalco Chhak road in Bhubaneswar.
The trial began with a 150-metre stretch near the Jayadev Vihar flyover, where three distinct lanes were temporarily marked using cone-shaped barriers. While motorists are currently allowed to use any lane, specific lanes for two-wheelers, cars, and heavy vehicles will soon be designated.
“We are prioritizing awareness first, as many drivers are new to lane discipline. This step will help reduce accidents and control vehicle speed,” said DCP (Traffic) Tapan Mohanty.
He added that drivers will be required to maintain their lanes before reaching intersections, and overtaking will be prohibited in designated lane-driving zones. Traffic personnel will closely monitor compliance and take strict action against violators.
The initiative will be expanded to major traffic junctions and bus stops citywide. Planned upgrades include thermoplastic paint for clear lane markings, signage boards, speed-monitoring devices, and bollards.
Under the proposed system, two-wheelers will use the left lane with a speed cap of 45 km/hr, heavy vehicles will occupy the middle lane at 40 km/hr, and cars will take the right lane, also at 45 km/hr.
The first phase will focus on public awareness, followed by strict enforcement to ensure adherence and improve road discipline in the city.
