Binny, The Only Orangutan In Indian Zoos Dies After Prolonged Illness

After a prolonged illness, the lone Orangutan of India, ‘Binny’, died in Nandankanan Zoological Park on Wednesday night at 9.40 pm.

According to zoo authorities, 41 year old Binny had old age issues along with long term illness. The preliminary postmortem report by the experts from veterinary college suggests the death of the orangutan is due to acute pneumonia and hepatitis.

For the last three days, she was suffering from cold and old age related respiratory tract issues. We were providing her all the required treatment,” said Nandankanan Deputy Director Jayanta Das.

“Tissue samples were collected for further investigation to correlate the cause of death,” informed Das.

She was kept in enclosure 60 (B) where she slept most of the time due to multiple ailments.

For the last two years, she was undergoing treatment for infected wound in her throat. Veterinary doctors of OUAT were treating her wound as per the advise of veterinary specialists of England and Singapore. Her medical care was being overseen by OUAT’s Professor Niranjan Sahoo and chief of Surgery Department Dr Indramani Nath and their team.

Binny was brought to Nandankanan from Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Pune on November 20, 2003. At that time, she was only 25 years old.
