Booked Together: The Rise of ‘Boccaholics’ in Bhubaneswar

Booked Together: The Rise of ‘Boccaholics’ in Bhubaneswar

In a world dominated by screens and digital distractions, ‘Boccaholics’ rekindles the joy of reading and restores the communal experience of storytelling.

Book reading is usually considered a solitary activity. But picture this: it’s you and your friends, or a bunch of strangers, sitting around and sharing your love for books in a room. The air chills with excitement as your ideas come together, and you actively discuss the novel you’ve just read, diving into the depths of characters, dissecting intricate plots, and unraveling underlying themes. Someone initiates an analytical question with no right or wrong answer, but still manages to create a healthy discussion space within the group. In this way, you can revel in the magic created by the publication.

In a corner of Master Canteen, nestled quietly inside Bocca Cafe, a cafe known more for its coffee & conversation, sits ‘Bocca Book Store, a place where stories aren’t just read, but felt. It doesn’t scream for attention. Instead, it invites quietly, a rare thing in a world constantly asking for more of it.

From this unassuming nook emerged ‘Boccaholics’, a book club that doesn’t aim to intellectualize reading but to humanize it. Its purpose is neither academic nor performative. It is simpler to bring people back to books, and more importantly, to one another. In a time when reading feels like a fading ritual, ‘Boccaholics’ offers a seat at the table for the hesitant reader, the returning one, the curious listener.

At its core lies a belief: that the act of reading can extend beyond the page into eye contact, counterthought, even disagreement. Here, a book becomes a shared mirror, held up from different angles, by people who may never cross paths again. And yet, for an hour or two, they sit side by side not just consuming a story, but becoming a part of one.

Book clubs not only benefit individual readers but also play a crucial role in community engagement and the promotion of reading cultures. Two significant aspects are the support they create for local bookstores and libraries, and in organizing literary events and activities.

To understand what Bocca Book Store’s first-ever book club meet truly felt like, we reached out to the people who made it special, Bocca Book Club members, ‘THE BOCCAHOLICS’. We asked them about their experience of joining the discussion, connecting with fellow readers, and revisiting the book through fresh perspectives. Here’s what they had to say: honest, heartfelt, and straight from the minds of people who love stories as much as we do.

Aditya Roy, Branding Lead & Hobbyist Writer

1. What made you want to attend the first ‘Boccaholics’ Book Club meet?
I’ve always loved reading, writing, and being in spaces that spark thoughtful conversations. I’ve been a regular at ‘Bocca Café’ even before the bookstore opened, so when something as exciting as a book club came up at a familiar place, I didn’t have to think twice; it felt like a natural next step.

2. How did it feel to be in a room full of new people who share your love for books?
Thanks to my profession and hobbies have been trained well. And even though the faces were unfamiliar, the place felt like home. The shared love for reading added comfort and made it easy to connect, creating a cozy and welcoming group atmosphere right from the start.

3. What was your favorite part of the meet, or something unexpected that stayed with you?
Okay, I’ll admit, I didn’t finish the book before the meeting! I usually avoid starting something new before completing what I’m already into. But listening to others talk about the book and the author was a surprising delight. I ended up discovering a new title I genuinely want to read, which felt special.

4. Did the discussion change or deepen how you saw the book?
Since I hadn’t read the book yet, I wouldn’t say my understanding changed, but the discussion made me curious. The way others spoke about it sparked my interest and nudged me to want to explore it on my own. That’s a win in itself for any book club session, I’d say.

5. Would you like to attend future book club meetings?
Absolutely. The first session introduced me to some genuinely lovely people and some books and authors I hadn’t explored before. That kind of discovery, both literary and social, is something I’d love to experience again. So yes, I’m definitely in for more ‘Boccaholics’ sessions in the future.

6. Would you recommend ‘Boccaholics’ to someone else? What would you say?
I would! It’s a laid-back, youthful space, much more casual than most traditional book clubs I’ve been to. That makes it super accessible for today’s generation. If someone’s looking for an easy and enjoyable way to get into book clubs, ‘Boccaholics’ is a perfect starting point.

1. How did you end up joining the very first ‘Boccaholics’ Book Club meet?
I didn’t plan on it at all! I was at ‘Bocca Cafe’ to meet my cousins, and while browsing for a book at ‘Bocca Book Store’, I stumbled upon the club. As someone who loves to read, I instantly decided to join in. It felt like a spontaneous but meant-to-be kind of moment.

2. How did it feel being surrounded by strangers who love reading as much as you do?
Honestly, it felt like a space that was already mine. Though I didn’t know anyone, there was a strange sense of familiarity, like I belonged. It was one of those rare moments when you feel at home among strangers. That quiet comfort stayed with me.

3. Was there a particular moment or feeling from the meeting that stayed with you?
What stayed with me was the overall vibe, calm, open, and welcoming. But more than that, it was the fact that I learned something from every single person in that room. Everyone brought their lens to the table, and that collective exchange made the whole experience memorable.

4. Did the group discussion shape your thoughts or feelings about the book or reading in general?
I loved listening to everyone share their thoughts on books and how reading had impacted their lives. It wasn’t just about the book; it was about how reading connects people. That, in itself, reshaped how I saw the reading experience, not just personal, but something shared and beautiful.

5. Would you like to attend more ‘Boccaholics’ sessions in the future?
Definitely yes. My schedule doesn’t allow me much time to read these days, but being part of a book club like this keeps me grounded in that habit. Even if I’m not reading as much as I’d like to, attending the meet helps me stay connected with that part of myself.

6. How would you describe this book club to someone thinking of joining?
I’d recommend it 200%. There’s nothing more comforting than sharing your love for books with people you’ve never met, who slowly start to feel familiar. It’s not just a club; it’s a space where stories bring people together, and strangers feel like friends, even if just for an evening.

1. What made you want to be part of the ‘Boccaholics’ Book Club?
As an introvert and homebody, I usually avoid group settings. But this felt like a gentle push outside my comfort zone. The idea of connecting with fellow readers, even strangers, felt like a rare opportunity. I saw the club as a safe step toward socializing while staying rooted in something I already love, reading.

2. How did you feel being in that space for the first time?
I was anxious at first and felt a little out of place. But once the conversation began, something shifted. The awkwardness melted, and I felt more at ease. By the end of it, I honestly didn’t want to leave. It turned into a space where silence wasn’t scary, and connection happened gently, without pressure.

3. What stood out to you the most about the experience?
The overall vibe stayed with me. Warm, calm, and comforting. It wasn’t just about the book; it was about the energy in the room. People listened without interrupting, spoke without judgment. For someone who finds group dynamics overwhelming, that kind of space felt rare. It was quiet, but not lonely, and I loved that.

4. Did the discussion change the way you connected with the book?
Yes, it did. Normally, I read and move on without much reflection. But listening to others talk about the characters and themes made the book linger longer in my mind. I’ll probably remember it better and might even reread it. Sharing perspectives made the story feel richer, like I was seeing it through new eyes.

5. Would you be open to joining future sessions?
Absolutely. As long as I’m around, I’d love to return. It’s not often you find a space that’s both social and comfortable. The mix of books, coffee, and slow, meaningful conversation is something I genuinely look forward to. It helps me stay connected not just to reading, but to people who feel the same.

6. How would you describe this book club to someone like you?
It’s perfect for readers who enjoy solitude but crave connection every now and then. Especially for introverts, it feels like a gentle entry into the community. The energy was open, warm, and never overwhelming. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to be surrounded by stories, silence, and people who understand both.

1. What drew you to join the ‘Boccaholics’ Book Club?
I enjoy meeting new people and sharing thoughts about books, so joining the club felt natural. I’ve previously been part of book clubs in Indore and Pune as well. It felt good to find something similar in Bhubaneswar, a space to connect, exchange ideas, and enjoy thoughtful conversations around literature with fellow readers.

2. How did you feel walking into the first meeting?
I didn’t feel hesitant or nervous. I was very comfortable during the session. The open conversation around different genres of books helped me settle in even more. It created a relaxed atmosphere where everyone could share freely. The ease of that discussion made it a memorable and positive first experience for me.

3. Was there a particular moment or comment that stayed with you?
Yes, someone shared a thought about Japanese literature having its distinct perspective. That line stayed with me. It reminded me how books from different cultures open us up to completely new ways of thinking. I found that moment particularly insightful, and it added something unique to the overall discussion.

4. Did the group conversation influence how you viewed the book?
Yes, absolutely. As the discussion progressed and other members shared their interpretations and reflections, I noticed my perspective evolving. Listening to varied understandings opened up angles I hadn’t considered earlier. It reminded me of the power of group reading, how one story can unfold differently for everyone, and shift your view.

5. Would you like to be part of future book club meets?
Definitely yes, as long as I’m in Bhubaneswar, I’d love to continue attending the club. It’s not just about reading; it’s about engaging with others, hearing diverse viewpoints, and keeping that literary spark alive.

6. Would you recommend ‘Boccaholics’ to others? What would you say?
I’d recommend it to my friends. It’s a great space for readers to explore different genres, engage in healthy conversations, and broaden their perspectives. The sessions are enriching without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of club that encourages you to think beyond the book and see stories through many different lenses.

Saachi Kaur, Branding Manager

1. What made you say yes to joining the first book club meeting?

I joined because I was curious to hear different perspectives on the same book. It was my first book club, and I’m really glad I gave it a shot.

2. How did it feel walking into a room full of book lovers?

It felt surprisingly comforting to walk into a space full of strangers who all shared a love for reading. I genuinely enjoyed meeting new people, and it was fun hearing different thoughts and experiences. I got to learn a lot, both from the book and from everyone there.

3. Was there a particular moment from the session that stayed with you?

There wasn’t one particular moment, but I really enjoyed the conversations, especially how the host kept asking so many interesting questions that made the room feel lively and engaging. We also got to talk about different genres and books, especially manga and Ikigai, which are my favorites.

4. Did the discussion change or deepen how you saw the book?

Yes, definitely. Since the book had four stories, it was interesting to hear how differently people interpreted them. The part about time travel especially stood out, it's such a fantasy concept, but someone mentioned how, if it were real, it could give people a chance to reconnect or say things they never got to. That made me pause and think.

5. Would you return for the next book club meeting? Why or why not?

I’d love to! It was a fun, thoughtful space, and I’m excited to be part of more such conversations

6. Would you recommend this book club to a friend? What would you tell them?

I’d say, bro, go for it! It’s such a chill and engaging space where you get to meet people who actually love reading. The discussions are fun, sometimes deep, and you end up seeing books in a whole new way. Plus, it’s a great way to step out of your usual circle and connect over stories.

In a city where the reading culture quietly fades beneath honking streets and glowing screens, ‘Boccaholics’ dares to be a whisper, a soft gathering of minds who still believe in the power of the page. It’s more than a book club; it’s a growing circle of readers reclaiming space, thought, and conversation. Here, strangers turn into story-sharers, and books become bridges. If Bhubaneswar is witnessing something like this, a grassroots attempt to nurture reading, reflection, and quiet rebellion, then it isn’t just an event. It’s a movement. And those who are part of it have every reason to feel proud.
