Chariot Construction for Rath Yatra Halted in Puri Amid Wood Dispute

Construction of the chariots for the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra has been temporarily suspended in Puri following a dispute over the collection of leftover wood used in the chariot-making process.

The Vishwakarma Maharana servitors, who are responsible for constructing the three chariots, stopped work in protest against new administrative restrictions on the removal of surplus wood from the construction site.

Traditionally, the servitors are permitted to take leftover wooden pieces measuring up to four feet in length, known as Khei, as part of their customary share. However, under recently introduced guidelines, restrictions have reportedly been imposed on the removal of extra wood from the chariot construction yard.

As a result, the Maharana servitors suspended work on the chariots and did not begin construction activities as scheduled.

The dispute escalated after the servitors were allegedly prevented from taking surplus wood. While existing provisions allow them to collect wooden pieces below four feet in length, the servitors have raised concerns regarding restrictions on the collection of additional leftover wood, including Chirat wood, which they claim has traditionally been allowed. The issue has temporarily stalled chariot construction work ahead of the upcoming Rath Yatra, with discussions expected to take place to resolve the matter.
