Cheers! Why We Should Raise A Toast To Beer Today
Gather with your friends for some ‘beer bonding’ today, buying each other drinks. And don’t forget to thank the bartender. For that’s the spirit of International Beer Day celebrated on the first Friday of August.
It began as a local event in Santa Cruz, California in 2007, but has since grown into a worldwide celebration spanning 207 cities across 80 countries, including India. The ‘noble aim’ is to unite the world under the banner of beer, by celebrating the beers of all nations together on a single day. Simply put, enjoy some beer with your friends.
Here are five fun facts about beer that we bet you didn’t know:
#1 Cheers All Around: Beer is the world’s most widely consumed alcoholic beverage and the third-most popular drink overall (after water and tea). On average, a can of beer contains 100-150 calories 10-15 g of carbohydrates. So better watch your belly!
#2 Land of the Pharaohs: Beer was a staple food in ancient Egypt. According to archaeologists, workers building the pyramids in Giza received about 4 litres of beer a day. No wonder, the pyramids rock!
#3 Tipsy Social Service: Alcoholics in Amsterdam are paid five cans of beer, besides 10 Euros and a packet of rolling tobacco for cleaning city streets. Now, that’s what you call mixing business with pleasure!
#4 That is a Record: Steven Petrosino of New Cumberland, Pennsylvania downed 1 litre of beer in a chilly 1.3 seconds in 1977. That made him a World Beer Chugging Champion, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. That’s one hell of a feat!
#5 Packing a Punch: The world´s strongest beer is Brewmeister’s ‘Snake Venom’. While regular beer usually contains about 5% ABV (Alcohol By Volume), this Scottish killer packs a stomach-burning 67.5% ABV. Who‘s up for it?
Phew! That was ‘heady’ to say the least. So enjoy the day. And do share your fav beer moments with us in the comment section below!
