Final Preparations Underway for Deba Snana Purnima 2025 at Puri, Here is The Detailed Schedule

With Deba Snana Purnima just a day away, preparations have entered their final phase at the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri. On this auspicious day the Holy Trinity, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra will be ceremoniously escorted to the Snana Mandap for their divine ablutions.

At around midday, 108 pots of aromatic and herbal water sourced from the temple's sacred "Suna Kua" (Golden Well) and infused with saffron, sandalwood, camphor, and medicinal herbs will be poured over the deities: 35 pots for Jagannath, 33 for Balabhadra, 22 for Subhadra, and 18 for Sudarshana. The sibling deities will wear Senapata, protective wooden armour to withstand the stress of the procession. The Daita Prabesha Niti, a formal transfer of care to the Daitapatis, will also be completed.  Prior to Purnima, priests performed the Bahukanta and Taramala Bandha rituals to further sanctify the deities.

Today, the Senapata ritual will take place, during which the temple will remain closed to devotees until 2 PM.

After the bath, the deities will be adorned in the majestic Gaja Bhesha (elephant attire), a highlight of this festival and a tribute to the Ganapatya tradition. The ceremonial sweeping (Chhera Pahanra) will be performed by the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri, followed by Sahana Mela (public viewing) in the evening. Post-homage, the deities will enter the Anasara period, 15 days of seclusion believed necessary for recovery after the ceremonial bath.

For the festival, over 300 doctors will be posted at several hospitals in Puri to provide health care services. Air-conditioned rooms would be made available for sunstroke victims at primary health centres and other hospitals, besides necessary treatment.
