Heritage Activist Anil Dhir Felicitated; Raises Alarm Over Idol Thefts in Odisha Temples
Noted researcher and heritage activist Anil Dhir was felicitated today by Odisha’s Cultural Minister, Suryawanshi Suraj, at a special event organised by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi at Bhubaneswar Panthanivas. The programme, themed “Kalinga War Karmasala”, celebrated Dhir’s notable contributions to historical research and cultural preservation.

In his address, Dhir spoke about the Kalinga War as a defining moment in Indian history, underlining Emperor Ashoka’s transformation and its far-reaching legacy. The gathering witnessed the participation of historians, writers, and cultural enthusiasts, who lauded the Akademi’s efforts in promoting Odisha’s heritage discourse.
During the event, Dhir raised serious concerns over the growing menace of idol thefts from ancient temples across Odisha. Highlighting recent incidents in Khordha, Puri, and Cuttack districts, he called for urgent protective measures to safeguard the state’s invaluable cultural assets.

Key Recommendations by Anil Dhir to Protect Temple Heritage:
Digital Documentation & GPS Tagging: Cataloguing temple artifacts with photographs, descriptions, and coordinates.
Strengthening Security: Installation of CCTV cameras, alarms, and deployment of trained guards.
Community Involvement: Empowering local villagers and temple committees as “Heritage Guardians.”
Strict Law Enforcement: Swift police action and coordination with ASI and State Archaeology.
Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public about the risks of idol theft and illegal trade.
Dhir also stressed that many stolen idols have ended up in foreign museums and private collections. He urged stronger international repatriation efforts and cooperation between state and central heritage bodies.
The Odisha State Archaeology Department has acknowledged Dhir’s suggestions and assured that steps will be taken to reinforce temple security and safeguard the state’s cultural legacy.
