Janpath Road in Bhubaneswar to Get a Makeover with Steel Grills and Floral Beautification

Janpath Road, one of Bhubaneswar’s most iconic and busiest stretches, is all set to receive a fresh facelift. The median along the stretch from Master Canteen to Vani Vihar will soon be revamped, with the current damaged bamboo fencing being replaced by durable mild steel (MS) grills.

As part of this beautification and redevelopment initiative, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has floated a fresh round of tenders for the project, with an estimated budget of ₹60 lakh.

In addition to the installation of steel grills, the plan includes planting a variety of seasonal flowering plants along the median to enhance the road’s visual appeal.

Previously, the median was secured with iron grills, which later fell into disrepair due to lack of upkeep. These were replaced with green bamboo fencing in an attempt to create a low-cost, eco-friendly barrier. However, the bamboo structure proved to be fragile, often broken or vandalised by pedestrians using it as a shortcut to cross the road.

A senior BSCL official explained, “The bamboo fencing was intended to protect the decorative plants, but it failed to serve the purpose due to constant damage. With the new design, we aim to improve both pedestrian safety and plant protection.”

The redevelopment is part of the broader Smart City transformation efforts, initiated after Bhubaneswar was selected as a Smart City in 2016. Since then, Janpath has witnessed significant upgrades, including wider footpaths, dedicated parking zones, and aesthetic lighting, with nearly ₹106 crore already invested in its overall development.
