Music Blossomed In Bhubaneswar For Bollywood Lyricist/Composer Kunaal Vermaa
Bollywood lyricist & composer Kunaal Vermaa is on a new track, literally. After creating innumerable chartbusters such as ‘Hasi Ban Gaye’, ‘Chale Aana’, ‘Phir Mulaqat’, ‘Malang’, ‘Tum Hi Aana’, ‘O Jaanwaale’ among others, Kunaal has now launched himself as a singer.
“As a musician, my dream was when the whole world will sing my songs, I will start singing,” Kunaal revealed to MCL.
Sharing about his “launchpad” as a singer, he said, “The song is a romantic mash-up of six super hit numbers out of the 120 plus songs that I have written and composed till now. People love my songs, but many don’t know me as the creator. I felt that this is the right time to present myself as a singer. However, penning lyrics will last forever for me. But singing along is a step forward now to stay in the memory of people.”
Talking about memories, Kunaal recounted how his journey into the world of music composition began in Bhubaneswar. “Back then, I only used to write songs. I had a friend in Bhubaneswar who was a big source of encouragement. On one occasion, she listened to my song and asked me about the composition. That time I didn’t know what music composition was so I said I get tunes randomly framed in mind when I write. As she was into music as well, she understood the connection. She helped me a lot to get into music. I became confident. That is a very special part of my life when I really started following my passion for music,” he said.
His passion led him to junk his earlier profession as a designer in Jaipur and take the plunge into song composition for Bollywood in 2012. “I completely surrendered myself to follow the music. ‘Hasi Ban Gaye’ from ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ happened and there was no looking back.”
Now an established name in Bollywood, Kunaal has launched a platform ‘Songster’ to give opportunities to newcomers in the music industry. “Songster is a composers’ group and a chance for new talents to experiment in the industry. When I feel that the person has the spark, I give a try. Rangon Chatterjee is one of the fresh talents in the industry launched by Songster. He has worked along with me in ‘Why Cheat India’ and ‘Tootey Khwaab’,” he shared.

A master at both soulful and feet tapping music, Kunaal finds inspiration all around, even in mundane things that most others tend to overlook. “Inspiration is everywhere, only if you can identify it. I recently wrote a poem about my childhood memories inspired by the sound of a bullock cart and sights of empty roads in my village,” Kunaal recalled.
Talking about ‘empty roads’, how does he view the Covid-19 crisis and consequent lockdown? “This phase has made all of us realize that our lives were blocked with many worthless things. The initial days of the lockdown were bewildering. But things become easier after acceptance. We are getting back to usual chores. I am writing a lot and working on many upcoming projects. The music industry is running fine because we have required setups at our respective homes. Only visuals cannot be shot so the demand for audio will be high. Even newcomers should not stop believing in pursuing their dreams for the music industry because things will be normal eventually,” he replied brimming with optimism.
And what about social media becoming the new normal now? “Life is not about social media likes but learning. Digital has become the new future. The human tendency is unstoppable. Virtual is the new way. After this crisis, the internet will be the stage. People are already aware and exploring what new can be done to make things happen,” he signed off.
