Odia Doctor Who Performed Hrithik Roshan’s Brain Surgery To Get Country’s Top Medical Award

Odisha-born well-known neurosurgeon Basant Kumar Mishra, who had performed the complicated brain surgery of Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan, has been selected for this year’s prestigious Dr B C Roy Award, which is considered to be the highest medical honour in the country.

Mishra, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery & Gamma Knife Surgery in P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC in Mumbai, will be awarded in the ‘Eminent Medical Person’ category. The renowned doctor will receive the award from President Ram Nath Kovind in New Delhi. The date of the ceremony is yet to be announced.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a silver salver. Reacting to his selection, Mishra said, “This is a recognition for our hard work as doctors. I am extremely happy and humbled.”

Under the guidance of Mishra, the Hinduja hospital was the first in Asia to acquire Gamma Knife technology. He was the first surgeon in India to perform Gamma Knife Radiosurgery and Awake Craniotomy. Besides, he is the first surgeon in the world to perform Computer Guided Aneurysm surgery. Mishra completed his early education in Bhubaneswar and later completed his MBBS from VSS Medical College, Sambalpur University in Burla. He did his post-graduation in General Surgery from Delhi University and his MCh Neurosurgery from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

The Odisha-born doctor has received the prestigious Pfizer Post Graduate Medical Award and the Commonwealth Medical Scholar, Edinburgh University, UK. Son of eminent economist and academician Baidyanath Mishra, the doctor lives in Mumbai with his wife and two sons.

The Medical Council of India instituted the Dr B C Roy National Award Fund in 1962. The award was first given in 1973 to Sandip Mukerjee, FRCS, of Willingdon Hospital (now Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital), New Delhi, by former President VV Giri.
