Over 6.9 Lakh Olive Ridley Turtles Nest at Rushikulya, Setting New Record
In a historic milestone, 6,98,718 Olive Ridley turtles arrived for mass nesting at the Rushikulya river mouth in Odisha during February 2025, breaking previous records under Operation Olivia.
Launched annually by the Indian Coast Guard from November to May, Operation Olivia safeguards these endangered turtles during their nesting season by ensuring safe breeding grounds and curbing illegal activities along India’s eastern coast.
Gahirmatha Beach in Odisha’s Kendrapara district remains the primary nesting site, hosting over 8 lakh turtles annually. However, threats like illegal fishing, net entanglement, and habitat loss persist.
To combat these, the Indian Coast Guard has conducted 5,387 surface patrols and 1,768 aerial surveillance missions, successfully detaining 366 boats involved in illegal fishing. Their dedicated vigilance continues to be a crucial force in protecting marine biodiversity and promoting sustainable maritime practices.
