“Parking”- A Riveting Journey of Conflict and Redemption
Being born and brought up in a developing city like Bhubaneswar and living in rented houses, we have always shifted to places with good parking space, which is a basic need. All of us may have encountered several conflicts related to parking, but little did I know that this could be a plot for a film, a good one indeed. Hats-off to director Ramkumar Balakrishnan, who has made a compelling debut with "Parking," a 2023 Tamil drama thriller that delves into the apparently ordinary yet highly relatable conflicts arising from the simple act of parking. Although, the title makes it look like a simple story, while watching it you’ll realise that it has a lot of suspense and thriller elements in it. The film explores clash between two families living in the same house, escalating from a parking space dispute to personal vendettas and, ultimately, redemption.
The plot revolves around Eshwar, an IT professional, and his pregnant wife Aathika, who move into a new house. The peaceful coexistence with their ground-floor neighbours, the old-fashioned Ilamparuthi and his family, takes a dark turn when Eshwar buys a car. The conflict over parking space becomes a catalyst for a series of events that expose the fragility of human relationships. The casting and performances in "Parking" are commendable, with Harish Kalyan delivering a convincing portrayal of Eshwar, a caring husband pushed to the brink by the unyielding Ilamparuthi, played with finesse by M. S. Bhaskar. The tension between the two characters is palpable, creating a gripping narrative that keeps the audience engaged throughout the film's 129-minute runtime. Besides the major characters, all the other supporting actors also have played their part really well, which makes the story telling more authentic. And that is what I like the most about all such South Indian regional cinema these days. Irrespective of any superstar or ‘glamour’ in the film, you can’t skip a single scene or lose attention.
Capturing the escalating tension and emotional nuances effectively, the cinematography by Jiju Sunny maintains the pace of the film very well. This allows the audience to feel the mounting pressure and intensity as the parking dispute spirals out of control. The music by Sam C. S. complements the narrative beautifully, enhancing the emotional and relatable impact of key scenes. The film's soundtrack adds depth to the storytelling, effectively conveying the characters' internal struggles.
Humans have several moods and emotional states of mind. The screenplay, written by director Ramkumar Balakrishnan, skillfully navigates through the complexities of human emotions, portraying the characters as multidimensional individuals with flaws and virtues. The parking dispute serves as a metaphor for the broader theme of ego, pride, and the consequences of unchecked animosity. One of the film's strengths lies in its ability to balance intense drama with moments of reflection and realisation. The characters undergo significant transformations, with the journey of Eshwar and Ilamparuthi from anger to introspection being particularly noteworthy. The climax, marked by a powerful confrontation and subsequent series of events, brings a satisfying resolution to the narrative. So the film's positive reception from critics is well-deserved.
"Parking" successfully combines elements of drama and thriller, offering a commentary on the importance of communication and understanding in resolving conflicts. This is a noteworthy addition to regional cinema, showcasing the talent of its director and the cast. The film's exploration of interpersonal dynamics and redemption makes it a compelling watch for audiences seeking a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant cinematic experience. Such films prove that we are surrounded with interesting plots and stories, we just have to take notice of them and realize their potential.
