Railway Police Constable Displays Exemplary Bravery, Saves Passenger at Cuttack Station
In an inspiring act of bravery and presence of mind, Constable Tulu Behera of the Railway Police Force (Badge No. 186) averted a potential tragedy at Cuttack Railway Station early Thursday morning by rescuing a passenger who had slipped while attempting to board a moving train.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:05 a.m., when Md. Mujahir, a 44-year-old resident of Mirjapur, Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal, tried to board Train No. 22503 (Kanyakumari–Dibrugarh Express) bound for Kishanganj. As the train began to pick up speed, Mujahir lost his footing on the steps and slipped, falling dangerously close to the gap between the moving train and the platform. With the train still in motion, he faced the imminent threat of being crushed beneath the wheels.
Constable Behera, who was on duty and positioned nearby, responded with remarkable speed and courage. He sprinted to the spot, grabbed Mujahir’s hands just in time, and pulled him away from the edge, saving him from what would almost certainly have been a fatal accident. His swift and decisive action not only saved a life but also underscored the critical role of alert and committed law enforcement officers at busy railway stations.
The heroic rescue drew widespread praise from senior officials. Shri Y.B. Khurania, IPS, Director General of Police, Odisha, lauded Constable Behera’s courageous effort and announced a cash reward of ₹2,500 in recognition of his service. Shri Arun Bothra, Additional Director General, Coastal Security and Railways, personally spoke to Constable Behera, commending him for his exceptional presence of mind and quick response under pressure.
