Sambalpur Gears Up for Grand Sital Sasthi Yatra from May 31

Sambalpur city is all set to celebrate the historic Sital Sasthi Yatra, a grand festival marking the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, beginning May 31. The rituals started earlier this week, and over 8,000 artistes from across India will participate in the vibrant three-day event.

The main wedding ceremony will be held on May 31 night, followed by the homecoming procession from June 1 night to June 2 evening.

Key Highlights by Committees:

Nandapada Committee

  • A 1.5 quintal silver pandal will host the divine marriage.
  • Around 1,800 folk artistes will perform traditional art forms like Dulduli, Samprada, Ganta, Shabar, Mayur, Aghori, Ghumura, and Chhau.
  • Special performances include Sher Baja from Kharagpur, Lavani from Mumbai, Melam from Kerala, and Tambola dancers.
  • Tableaux will feature Kalabhairava, Panchamukhi Hanuman, Rameshwaram, Sambhaji Maharaj, and Operation Sindoor.
  • Estimated budget: ₹70 lakh.

Jhaduapada Committee

  • Will host 150 artistes from Bhopal and 60 from Goa.
  • Dance troupes from Kolkata, Assam, and Puri will perform on mobile stages.
  • Themes include Aghori idols, Bramhos missile, Rafale jet, and a giant Nandi idol.
  • Over 2,700 artistes will participate.
  • Estimated budget: ₹60 lakh.

Mudipara Committee

  • Celebrations to include Mayur Singhasan, Hanuman’s chariot, and a Ram-Sita Rath with Neel Chakra.
  • Floats will depict Garuda, Narasimha avatar, and the Brahmos missile.
  • Cultural acts from Nagpur, Pune, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
  • More than 3,000 artistes involved.
  • Estimated budget: ₹40 lakh.
  • To support the festivities, the Odisha government has sanctioned ₹1.8 crore for 21 committees across western Odisha, including those in Sambalpur and surrounding areas.
  • This year’s Sital Sasthi promises to be a grand spectacle of devotion, culture, and tradition.
