When Bindu Sagar Lake Blazed

When Bindu Sagar Lake Blazed

It was a sight to behold when the sprawling Bindusagar Lake on Sunday dazzled with a spectacular display of colour, light, motion, music and water as part of the trial run of the musical fountain and soon-to-start laser and light and sound show. Those present for the trial show were left mesmerised even as it didn’t take too long for the breathtaking videos from the event to go viral on social media!

At a distance of 4.5 km from Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Bindu Sagar is a sacred lake located to the north of the Lingaraj Temple and to the east of the Ananta Vasudeva Temple in our historic city. Featuring prominently in history, it serves as a popular picnic spot and also one of the top places to visit in Bhubaneswar.

Surrounded by numerous temples and shrines, it is considered as the largest water body of Bhubaneswar. According to legends, the lake was created by Lord Shiva while bringing water from all the holy places to quench the thirst of Goddess Parvati. Therefore, it is believed that a dip in the Bindu Sagar Lake would wash away all the sins and drinking the holy water would help get rid of all diseases.Closely associated with the Lingaraj Temple, as the banks of the lake lay witness to a fantastic sight on Sunday, Tourism Minister Ashok Chandra Panda, BMC Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena, Tourism Director Archana Patnaik and former Tourism Director Nitin Bhanudas Jawale were all present for the visual treat.

“With the work on this continuing since the last two years, this ambitious project is going to be a lot bigger in near future,” informed Utpal Pati, Deputy Director, Tourism. “The script and story ideas for the multimedia show are still in progress, it will get a formal opening soon. ”Like the Dhauli and Konark shows, the show is likely to be functional in Odia, English and Hindi, all three languages.

After featuring prominently on the popular weekly attraction, Ekamra Walks, the light and sound show in this holy lake is going to be another initiative by the authorities to boost tourism towards the older, ancient part of the city, which often goesunseen.

With the World Hockey Cup 2018 approaching, the city will also see a government-endorsed initiative for art connoisseurs, the much-anticipated Bhubaneswar Art Trail.  The art trail will have its inaugural run during the World Cup, within the 1.3 km trail in Old Town where art related activities will be organised to attract interested globe-trotters who will be descending on the city during that period!
